Gold Price Today UK: Price per Gram for 24k, 22k, 18k and 9ct
What is the gold price today in the UK, in pounds, per gram and per troy ounce, for every common carat? This page gives you the spot price in plain English, updated daily on weekday evenings, and it shows you the two things most price sites leave out: what a dealer will actually pay you if you sell, and how the UK tax rules treat gold coins. Information only, never a tip to buy or sell.
Updated Friday 9 October 2026 at 18:15 London time. These are closing spot levels from our evening pipeline: gold closed at $4,179.80 per troy ounce and the pound closed at $1.3268. This page is updated daily, every weekday evening after the markets close. It is not a minute by minute feed.
The quick answer: 24 carat gold is £101.28 per gram and £3,150.16 per troy ounce, updated Thursday 15 October 2026 at 10:48 London time. The dollar gold price rose 1.74% against the previous close. 22 carat is £92.84 per gram, 18 carat is £75.96 per gram, and 9 carat is £37.98 per gram. If you sell, a dealer will pay you less than these spot values. The selling section below shows how much less, with a worked example.
On this page: today’s prices, price per gram by carat, what a sovereign is worth, what sellers actually get, gold coins and tax.
Gold price today in the UK
Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. The UK price is that dollar price converted into pounds, so it moves when either the dollar gold price or the pound moves. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. It is not the same as the ordinary ounce used for food (28.35 grams), and mixing the two up is the most common mistake people make when checking a price.

Gold price per gram UK, by carat
A carat measures purity. 24 carat is pure gold, and every step down mixes in more of another metal, usually copper or silver, which makes the item harder but worth less per gram. The price per gram is the 24 carat price multiplied by the carat divided by 24. The hallmark number stamped on UK jewellery is the same purity written in thousandths.
| Carat | Hallmark | Purity | Price per gram, Friday 9 October 2026 | What it is used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 carat | 999 | 99.9% | £101.28 | Investment bars and some coins |
| 22 carat | 916 | 91.6% | £92.84 | Gold sovereigns and traditional jewellery |
| 18 carat | 750 | 75.0% | £75.96 | Fine jewellery |
| 14 carat | 585 | 58.5% | £59.08 | Jewellery, common in the US and mainland Europe |
| 9 carat | 375 | 37.5% | £37.98 | Most UK high street jewellery |
What is a gold sovereign worth today
A full sovereign is a 22 carat coin made by The Royal Mint. It weighs 7.98 grams in total and contains about 7.32 grams of pure gold. Its melt value, the value of the gold in it at the spot price, is worked out like this:
7.98 grams x (22 divided by 24) x £101.28 per gram = £740.86.
Step by step: 7.98 x 22/24 gives 7.315 grams of pure gold, and 7.315 x £101.28 gives £740.86. A half sovereign weighs 3.99 grams, so its melt value is half of that, about £370.43 at the same price. Two warnings. First, melt value is not a payout: a dealer will normally offer below melt, as the next section explains. Second, some older or rarer sovereigns are worth more than melt to collectors, so never sell a dated coin for its gold value alone without a second opinion.
If you are selling gold, what you actually get
The prices on this page are spot prices: the market value of the metal itself. No dealer pays full spot. They test, refine, handle and resell your gold, and they take a margin for it. Chards, a long established UK dealer, states that its usual buying rates are 85% to 90% of spot for hallmarked gold and 80% to 85% for gold without a hallmark. Other buyers pay less, sometimes much less, which is why the first quote is rarely the best one.
Worked example. You have 10 grams of 9 carat jewellery. At today’s spot price of £37.98 per gram, the metal is worth 10 x £37.98 = £379.80. At 90% of spot you would be offered about £341.82. At 85% you would be offered about £322.83. Anything far below that range for hallmarked gold is a poor offer, and it is worth getting a second and third quote before you sell.
Before you sell: weigh the item on kitchen scales for a rough figure, look for the hallmark number (375 means 9 carat, 750 means 18 carat), and remember that stones and non gold parts add weight but no gold value.
Why the UK gold price moves
The UK price has two levers, and either one can move it on its own.
Lever one: the dollar gold price. Gold trades around the world in US dollars per troy ounce. Demand rises and falls with interest rate expectations, inflation worries and world events, and the dollar price moves with them.
Lever two: the pound. To get the UK price, the dollar price is divided by the pound to dollar exchange rate. If the dollar price stays flat and the pound weakens by 1%, the UK gold price rises by about 1%. If the pound strengthens, UK gold gets cheaper even when the dollar price has not moved. This is why gold can hit a record in pounds before it hits one in dollars, or the other way round.
This page reports the price. It does not predict it, and nobody can tell you where gold goes next.
Gold coins and tax, in plain English
VAT. Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK. HMRC’s VAT Notice 701/21 defines investment gold as gold bars of a purity of at least 995 thousandths, and gold coins minted after 1800 that are at least 900 thousandths pure, are or have been legal tender in their country of origin, and are normally sold at no more than 180% of the value of the gold they contain.
VAT Notice 701/21A lists the investment gold coins whose supply is exempt. Gold jewellery is not investment gold, and it sits in a different market.
Capital Gains Tax. Gold Britannia coins and gold sovereigns minted in 1837 or later are sterling currency, and gains on sterling currency are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. HMRC’s Capital Gains Manual, paragraph CG78308, confirms this, under section 21 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992.
Gold bars and foreign coins, such as Krugerrands, are not sterling currency, so gains on them can be taxed once your total gains pass the annual exempt amount (£3,000 for individuals in 2026/27). Tax rules can change, and if the sums are large, take advice on your own position.

How we work out these prices
Our evening pipeline takes the gold price in dollars and the pound to dollar rate, and divides one by the other to get the price per troy ounce in pounds. Per gram is the ounce price divided by 31.1034768, the number of grams in a troy ounce. Each carat price is the 24 carat per gram price multiplied by the carat divided by 24. At build time we benchmarked the method against BullionByPost and Chards, the two UK dealers named in our build notes, and the formula matched their published per gram figures.
Figures are rounded to the nearest penny, so a worked example using the printed per gram price may differ by a penny or two from the unrounded calculation.

Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 gram of gold in the UK today?
24 carat gold is £101.28 per gram, based on £3,150.16 per troy ounce, updated on Friday 9 October 2026 at 18:15 London time. This page is updated daily on weekday evenings, and the date and time of the latest update are shown at the top of the page.
How much is 22 carat gold in the UK?
22 carat gold is £92.84 per gram at Friday 9 October 2026’s close. The figure is the 24 carat price, £101.28 per gram, multiplied by 22 divided by 24, because 22 carat gold is 22 parts pure gold out of 24. It carries a 916 hallmark and is the purity used for gold sovereigns and traditional jewellery.
What is a troy ounce, and why does it matter?
A troy ounce is the unit gold is priced in, and it weighs 31.1034768 grams. An ordinary ounce weighs 28.35 grams. If you divide the gold price by 28.35 instead of 31.1034768, you overstate the per gram price by almost 10%, which is the most common error in gold price checks.
How much is 9 carat gold per gram in the UK?
9 carat gold is 37.5% pure, so its spot value per gram is the 24 carat price multiplied by 0.375. At Friday’s price that is £37.98 per gram. A dealer buying 9 carat jewellery will pay a percentage of that figure, not the full amount.
How much is a tola of gold in the UK?
A tola is a weight, 11.66 grams, not a purity. At Friday 9 October 2026’s closing prices, one tola of 22 carat gold is 11.66 x £92.84 = £1,082.51, and one tola of 24 carat gold is 11.66 x £101.28 = £1,180.92. If you sell, a dealer will pay below these spot values.
What is a gold sovereign worth today?
Its melt value is its pure gold content, about 7.32 grams, multiplied by the 24 carat price per gram. At Friday’s price the worked example above gives £740.86. A dealer’s buying offer will normally be below melt value, and rare dates can be worth more than melt to collectors.
Why do jewellers and scrap buyers pay less than the price on this page?
Because the price here is the spot value of the metal, and a buyer has to test, refine, handle and resell it. One major UK dealer, Chards, states its usual buying rates are 85% to 90% of spot for hallmarked gold. Always get more than one quote, and never post gold to a buyer who will not state their percentage of spot first.
Is gold tax free in the UK?
Investment gold is exempt from VAT. On top of that, UK legal tender gold coins, Britannias and sovereigns minted in 1837 or later, are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents because they are sterling currency. Gold bars and foreign coins do not get the Capital Gains Tax exemption. See the tax section above for the official sources.
Do you pay tax when you sell gold in the UK?
It depends on what you sell. Gains on gold sovereigns minted in 1837 or later and Britannias are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, because the coins are sterling currency. Gains on gold bars and foreign coins can be taxed once your total gains pass the annual exempt amount, £3,000 in 2026/27. The tax section above links the HMRC sources.
