Make Money on Prolific: UK Review and Realistic Earnings
Our UK Prolific review: enforced minimum pay of £6 an hour, a £6 PayPal cashout, the waiting list explained, realistic monthly earnings, the About You trick that unlocks more studies, and the UK tax rule most reviews miss.

TL;DR
Prolific is a UK research platform that pays you to take part in online studies from universities, companies and AI labs. It is free to join, you must be 18 or over, and there is a waiting list. Prolific sets a minimum pay rate of £6 an hour and recommends £9 an hour. Most studies work out at roughly £8 to £12 an hour. You cash out to PayPal once your balance reaches £6. A realistic outcome is £20 to £80 a month for casual users, and £100 or more for active users in term time. It will not replace a wage, but it is one of the fairest paying options on our Make Money hub.
What is Prolific?
Prolific was founded at Oxford University in 2014. It connects researchers with people willing to take part in studies, and it now has participants in more than 40 countries, with the UK, the US and Europe the best served.
These are not the usual marketing surveys. Studies include psychology questionnaires, decision making games, academic research on money and behaviour, testing new products, and tasks that help train and check AI systems. Each study shows the pay and the estimated completion time before you start, along with the device you need.
How much can you earn on Prolific?
Prolific enforces a pay floor that most survey sites do not have. Researchers must pay at least £6 an hour, and Prolific recommends £9 an hour. In practice, UK reviewers report that most studies land between roughly £8 and £12 an hour, with better rates on longer or specialist studies.
Your monthly total depends on three things: how often you check the site, how well your profile matches what researchers want, and the time of year. Universities run more studies in term time (roughly September to May) and far fewer in summer.
| Type of user | Time on studies | Estimated monthly earnings |
|---|---|---|
| Casual (checks a few times a week) | About 1 to 2 hours a week | £20 to £50 |
| Regular (checks daily, alerts on) | About 3 to 5 hours a week | £60 to £120 |
| Active (peak hours, broad profile, term time) | About 6 to 10 hours a week | £120 to £200 |
These figures are estimates based on UK user reports, not a promise. A quiet month can pay much less, and December is often the slowest month of the year. Treat Prolific as productive spare time money: useful for bills, treats and topping up savings, not as income you can plan rent around.
How to make money on Prolific: sign up step by step
- Join the waiting list. Go to the official Prolific participants page and sign up as a participant with your email address. Sign up takes about three minutes.
- Wait for your invitation. Places are released as researchers need new participants. There is no published waiting time, so check your email, including spam, so you do not miss the invite.
- Verify your identity. Once invited, you verify your email, phone number and ID, and complete a short practice task. Prolific says this takes about 15 minutes.
- Complete the About You section in full. This is the most important step for earnings, explained below.
- Take your first studies. Studies appear on your dashboard. Pick one, complete it, and your pay moves to your balance once the researcher approves it.
- Cash out at £6. Link a PayPal account and withdraw once your approved balance reaches £6.
How Prolific pays you
Payment is by PayPal only. There are no points, tokens or gift cards: your balance is real cash in pounds (some studies pay in US dollars, which PayPal converts).
Two timings catch new users out. First, a completed study sits as pending until the researcher approves it. Most approvals land within a few days, but a researcher has up to about three weeks, so not every pound is available straight away. Second, your first four cashouts have a short gap between them. After those, transfers to PayPal are instant, according to Prolific.
Tips to get more studies on Prolific
- Finish your About You profile, and keep it current. Researchers filter participants using these answers: things like employment status, nationality, first language, student status and household details. Every question you leave blank is a study you cannot be matched to. If your answers stop matching your real life, your account can be flagged, so update it when things change and always answer honestly.
- Turn on alerts. Install the Prolific Assistant browser extension or allow notifications. Popular studies can fill within minutes, sometimes seconds.
- Check at peak times. Weekday daytime, when UK and US researchers are working, brings the most new studies. Evenings and weekends are quieter.
- Protect your approval rating. Read questions properly and answer attention checks carefully. A high approval rate keeps you eligible for more studies; careless answers are the fastest way to lose access.
- Expect a summer dip. Fewer academic studies run in June, July and August. Earnings usually recover in September.
Prolific and tax in the UK
Prolific income counts as casual or trading income. Under the UK trading allowance, the first £1,000 of gross trading income in a tax year is tax free, and if your total stays at £1,000 or less you generally do not need to tell HMRC. You must still keep records of what you earn. If your side income goes over £1,000 in a tax year, you need to register for Self Assessment. GOV.UK explains the rules in its guide to tax-free allowances on property and trading income.
One warning the other reviews skip: if you claim Universal Credit or other means-tested benefits, earnings from studies count as income and can affect your payments. Report them through your usual journal or channel rather than guessing.
Our verdict: is Prolific worth it?
Yes, with clear expectations. The downsides are real: a waiting list before you can start, no official mobile app (it runs in your browser, although many studies accept a phone or tablet), and study flow that rises and falls without warning. Against that, the pay floor is enforced, payment is cash to PayPal with a low £6 threshold, screening happens before a study starts rather than after you have done the work, and the studies themselves are often genuinely interesting. For UK users starting from nothing, it is the first platform we recommend in this category.
FAQs
Is Prolific legit?
Yes. Prolific has operated since 2014, works with universities and companies worldwide, and pays cash to PayPal. It holds a strong rating on Trustpilot (about 4.5 out of 5 when we checked). Only ever sign up through prolific.com, as copycat sites exist.
How long is the Prolific waiting list?
There is no fixed or published waiting time. Invitations go out as places open up for your demographic group, so it can be days for one person and much longer for another. Joining costs nothing, so it is worth getting in the queue early.
How much will I earn in my first month?
Most casual UK users report roughly £20 to £50 in a normal month once their account is active. Your first month may be lower while you complete your profile and learn when studies appear.
Do I need PayPal to use Prolific?
Yes. PayPal is the only way Prolific pays participants, so you need a PayPal account in your own name before you can cash out.
Why am I not getting any studies?
The usual causes are an incomplete About You profile, checking at quiet times, a demographic group that is temporarily full, or the summer break in academic research. Complete every profile question, turn on alerts, and check on weekday daytimes.
