TL;DR

UserTesting is legit and free to join. You record yourself using websites and apps while talking through your thoughts. A standard recorded test of 15 to 20 minutes usually pays $10, short tests pay about $4, and live conversations pay $30 to $120. Payment arrives by PayPal 14 days after each test, not 7 days as many older reviews still claim. The real limits are screeners, which reject most applicants, and volume: a few paid tests a week is normal, so treat this as extra money, not an income.

Website testing is one of the few small earning routes where the pay respects your time. This UserTesting review for UK readers covers current rates, the practice test, the screener reality nobody warns you about, and realistic earnings.

Is UserTesting legit?

Yes. Big brands pay UserTesting to watch real people use their websites and apps, and you receive part of that fee. Joining is free, testers are never charged, and payment is by PayPal. UserTesting shows a Trustpilot score of 4.5 out of 5 from over 3,800 reviews on its own signup page.

You must be 18 or over, and everyone starts with a short unpaid practice test. Pass it, and paid tests begin appearing in your feed.

How much does UserTesting pay?

Pay depends on the test type, its length and customer demand. Your test feed always shows the exact amount before you accept a test, so you never work blind.

Test typeTypical lengthPay
Short recorded testAround 5 minutes$4
Standard recorded test15 to 20 minutes$10
SurveyA few minutesVaries, lower than recorded tests, shown in your feed
Live Conversation30 minutes$30
Live Conversation60 minutes$60, with some sessions paying up to $120

Live Conversations are video calls with a researcher and the best paid work on the platform. Reliable testers with strong ratings see them more often.

Pay figures checked: 2 October 2026, against UserTesting’s own contributor pages and current tester reviews.

When and how do you get paid?

Every payment goes to your PayPal account, in US dollars, 14 days after you complete the test. There is no minimum payout threshold: each finished test triggers its own payment.

The 14 day wait exists because customers get a review window. If a customer takes no action, your payment is approved automatically. A customer can cancel a payment inside that window, and UserTesting lists the usual reasons: poor audio quality or background noise, sharing the wrong screen, skipping tasks, very short or off-topic answers, and answers that clash with your profile or screener responses.

You are paid in dollars, so PayPal converts to pounds at its own rate and the sterling amount moves with the exchange rate.

What equipment do you need?

  • A computer or phone. UserTesting’s minimums are Windows 7, 8 or 10, or Mac OS X 10.7 or later, with Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, and an upload speed of at least 3 Mbps. Phones need iOS 14 or later, or Android 10 or later.
  • A microphone. This is essential, because every recorded test is you talking aloud. A built-in phone or laptop microphone is acceptable, but a cheap headset usually sounds clearer.
  • A camera for live work. Live Conversations are video calls, so you need a webcam or your phone camera.
  • A PayPal account in your own name.

Applying on a computer needs no download for the practice test; applying on a phone means installing the UserTesting app first. One official warning: UserTesting does not recommend Xiaomi Android phones, as it has seen app problems with them.

How to pass the UserTesting practice test

The practice test is unpaid, and it decides everything. UserTesting is not grading whether you like the website. It is grading how clearly you communicate your thinking.

  • Talk continuously. Silence is the main reason beginners fail. Narrate what you see, what you are looking for and what you expect to happen.
  • Say it before you click it. “I need the delivery information, so I am scrolling to the footer” tells the reviewer far more than a silent click.
  • Be specific. “The checkout button is grey and easy to miss” is useful feedback. “This page is confusing” is not.
  • Finish every task fully. Read each instruction twice, complete every part, and answer the written questions at the end.
  • Check your sound first. Record a short sample and listen back. Pick a quiet room, close the door, and silence phone notifications.
  • Do not script it. Natural, honest reactions are exactly what customers are paying for, including moments where the site confuses you. Say so, and explain why.

Screeners: the honest part of this review

Almost every paid test starts with a screener: a minute or two of questions checking that you match the person the customer wants, such as online banking users or parents who shop on mobile. Screeners are unpaid, and rejection is the normal outcome. Being screened out of five to ten tests in a row is common, especially at the start, and it does not mean you did anything wrong.

Answer screeners honestly, always. If your screener answers clash with your profile or with how you behave in the test itself, the customer can cancel your payment, and repeat problems can end your account. A complete, up-to-date profile brings you more screeners, and popular tests fill quickly, so checking your dashboard regularly helps.

How much can you realistically earn in the UK?

Keep your expectations level. A few qualified tests a week is typical: two standard tests a week works out at roughly $80 a month. Active testers with high ratings who also land live conversations report $50 to $300 a month across reviews.

Your rating is the lever you control. Customers score every test from 1 to 5 stars, and testers who hold an average around 4.5 stars or higher receive more invitations and better paid work. Treat every test like it decides your next ten, because in effect it does.

This will not replace a job, and it was never meant to. It is solid, flexible extra money that fits around work, study or children. UK readers sit in one of the markets customers request most, which helps, but flow still rises and falls.

Do you pay tax on UserTesting earnings in the UK?

UserTesting does not deduct any tax, so your earnings are your responsibility. In the UK, the trading allowance on GOV.UK covers up to £1,000 a year of casual trading income, and if your total from this kind of work stays at or below £1,000 in a tax year, you may not need to tell HMRC. Above that, register for Self Assessment. Keep simple records of each payment as it arrives.

UserTesting review UK: frequently asked questions

Is UserTesting available in the UK?

Yes. UK residents aged 18 or over can join as contributors, and UK testers are among the people customers most often ask for. Test availability still varies week to week.

How long does UserTesting take to pay?

14 days after you complete a test, paid to your PayPal account. Many older reviews say 7 days, but UserTesting’s current contributor pages confirm 14 days.

Why am I not getting any tests?

Usually it is screeners, an incomplete profile, or timing, and most new testers see few tests at first. Complete every part of your profile, answer screeners honestly and quickly, and protect your ratings once work starts.

Can I do UserTesting on my phone?

Yes. Many tests run through the UserTesting app on iOS and Android. Having a computer as well gives you the widest choice, because desktop tests need one.

Is UserTesting really free, or are there hidden fees?

It is free to join and free to use, and UserTesting never charges testers. The only cost to you is PayPal’s currency conversion when your dollars become pounds.

Ready to try it? Apply through the official UserTesting signup page, take the practice test seriously, and give your ratings time to build.
