TL;DR

  • Yes, Klarna affects your credit score in the UK. Pay in 3 and Pay in 30 have been reported to Experian and TransUnion since 1 June 2022. The top US result for this question says Pay in 4 is not reported. That is a different product in a different country.
  • Missed payments are reported too, and a late mark stays on your file for six years. A £5 late fee applies once the retry window closes.
  • The checkout check is soft for Pay in 30 and Pay in 3, so applying does not dent your score. Only Klarna Financing runs a full hard search.
  • Since 15 July 2026, buy now pay later is FCA regulated credit, with affordability checks, help if you fall behind, and the right to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Most pages ranking for this question contradict each other. One says reporting began in June 2023 and covers all three agencies. This guide settles every figure from Klarna’s own UK terms and the Financial Conduct Authority, checked on 16 October 2026.

Does Klarna show on your credit report?

Yes, for most orders. Since 1 June 2022, Klarna has reported Pay in 3, Pay in 30, in-app shopping and Klarna card purchases to Experian and TransUnion. On-time payments, late payments and unpaid balances all appear. Orders from before that date were never reported, and everyday use builds a visible trail lenders can read.

Two details matter. Orders placed before 1 June 2022 were never reported, so older Klarna use leaves no trace. And because Klarna reports to two agencies only, the same spending can show on one file and be missing from another, which is why our guide to checking your credit report free shows how to see all three files without paying.

Fees above are for orders of £20 or more. Where only part of an order arrived and the total is £20 or less, the fee is 25% of the order price instead: a part order of £16 carries a £4 fee. Source: Klarna UK terms, checked 16 October 2026.

The check at checkout depends on the product. Pay in 30 and Pay in 3 use a soft check, visible only to you and with no effect on your score. Financing, spreading a larger purchase over 6 to 24 months, is a regulated credit agreement and runs a full hard search other lenders can see. We explain the difference in our guide to soft and hard credit searches.

What happens if you miss a Klarna payment?

Klarna retries the payment first, up to three times over 14 days on Pay in 3. If the money is still not collected, a £5 late fee is added and the missed payment is reported to Experian and TransUnion. The mark then stays on your file for six years, even after you pay the balance off.

Worked example: one missed instalment on a £90 order. You buy a £90 jacket on Pay in 3 and pay the first £30 when it ships. The second £30, due 30 days later, fails because your bank card was replaced. Klarna retries up to three times over 14 days. Still unpaid, a £5 fee is added, so that instalment costs £35, and the missed payment is reported to Experian and TransUnion. Paying settles the debt. It does not remove the mark, which stays until 2032.

The question readers ask most is whether one day late is a disaster. It is not, provided you act fast. Inside the retry window there is no fee, and a payment that completes within days is far less likely to be recorded as late than one left unpaid for weeks. Never ignore a failed payment: left unpaid for months, an account can end in a default, the heaviest mark a file can carry.

There is also a new safety net. Buy now pay later became regulated credit on 15 July 2026, so Klarna must now run proportionate affordability checks, give clearer information upfront including what happens if you miss a payment, support you if you fall behind, and accept complaints that can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service . Agreements signed before that date stay on the old unregulated terms for their whole life.

Which credit reference agencies does Klarna report to?

Two of the three. Klarna reports to Experian and TransUnion, not Equifax, so the same history can appear on one file and be missing from another. Checking only one report can mislead you, and a lender that checks Equifax alone may not see your Klarna use at all.

The start date is widely misreported, so let us settle it. Klarna’s announcement, covered by MoneySavingExpert at the time, confirms reporting began on 1 June 2022, not June 2023 as one ranking page claims. The data sat on files from 2022 but only began feeding into agency scores from around late 2023, once the agencies updated their scoring. If your score shifted during 2024 with no obvious cause, older Klarna payments feeding in is one possible reason. Our guide to UK credit score ranges shows what each agency counts as a good score.

Does Klarna affect a mortgage application?

It can. Mortgage underwriters read your credit file and your bank statements, and heavy buy now pay later use can look like living beyond your means. In a survey of 21 mortgage brokers by the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries, 67% had seen buy now pay later use cause or contribute to a rejection, including one applicant refused after 33 deferred Klarna payments in a year.

The practical fix is timing: clear buy now pay later balances and avoid new plans in the three to six months before applying, so neither your file nor your statements show a pattern of small debts. Our guide to what counts as a good credit score sets out the levels lenders like to see.

Do lenders see Klarna on your bank statements too?

Yes. Every Klarna instalment leaves your bank account as a visible payment, and mortgage and loan lenders ask for three to six months of statements. Frequent small payments to Klarna, Clearpay or Laybuy read as reliance on credit for everyday spending, even when every payment was made on time and your credit score itself is untouched.

This catches out applicants with clean files: every payment on time, yet the statement tells a story the score cannot. If you are building towards an application, our ten steps to improve your credit score include treating buy now pay later like real credit, because since July 2026 that is exactly what it is in law.

How long does a Klarna missed payment stay on your file?

Six years. A late or missed payment marker stays on your UK credit file for six years from the date it is recorded, and a default stays for six years from the default date, whether or not you later pay the money back. American sites that say seven years are quoting United States rules, not ours.

Paying up still helps: a settled mark looks better than an open one, and paying stops the balance growing. But if a mark is simply wrong, challenge it. Raise a dispute with the agency holding the file, and our free credit report guide walks through checking all three agencies so you can spot a wrong mark.

How can you use Klarna without hurting your score?

Use it like the credit it now is. Keep instalments few and small, turn on autopay, and never let a payment fail silently. Treat one missed payment as a six year decision, because on your file that is exactly what it is, fee, mark and all.

  • Turn on autopay in the Klarna app and keep the card on file in date.
  • Note each instalment date when you order, not when the payment fails.
  • Avoid stacking several Pay in 3 orders at the same time.
  • If a payment fails, fix it the same day, well inside the retry window.
  • Check your Experian and TransUnion files free every few months.
  • In the run up to a mortgage or loan application, pay in full at checkout instead.
  • If money is tight, contact Klarna early. Since 15 July 2026 it must follow FCA rules on supporting customers in difficulty.

Used rarely and paid automatically, Klarna is a convenience. Used weekly, it becomes a written record that you borrow to buy everyday things. The product is not the problem. The pattern is. If you are juggling card balances instead, our credit card payoff calculator shows what those balances really cost you each month.

What it means for your money

Used carefully, Klarna costs you nothing and can leave a helpful record of on time payments on your credit file. Used carelessly, one missed instalment costs a £5 fee and a late mark that stays for six years, and that mark is the real cost, not the fee.

A late mark sits on your file for six years, and any lender who checks your file in that time can see it: a card company, a loan provider, a car finance firm or a mortgage lender. One missed payment will not ruin your finances on its own, but it can mean a refusal, a smaller limit or a higher rate on the next thing you apply for, and it lands at the worst time if a big application is close.

The other side is real too. Since late 2023, the data Klarna reports has fed into credit scores, so a run of on time Pay in 3 or Pay in 30 payments builds a record that works in your favour. The safe way to use it is simple: keep the amounts small against your income, never stack several plans at once, and make sure the money for each instalment is in your account before the collection day. If a payment does fail, the retry window before the fee is your chance to fix it, so act inside those days, not after them.

And before any big application, a mortgage, a loan or a new card, check your file free and look at exactly what Klarna has reported about you. It takes minutes and it is the same file the lender will see.

Frequently asked questions

Does Klarna do a hard credit check?

No, not for Pay in 30 or Pay in 3. Those use a soft credit check, which leaves no trace other lenders can see and does not affect your score. Only Klarna Financing, spreading a purchase over 6 to 24 months, triggers a full hard search. Our guide to soft and hard credit searches explains how to tell them apart on your file.

I missed a Klarna payment by one day. Is my score damaged?

Almost certainly not, if you fix it straight away. The £5 fee only lands after the retry window closes: 7 days after the due date on Pay in 30, 14 days on Pay in 3. Update your card details the same day, let the retry succeed, and there is no fee and usually no mark.

Does paying Klarna on time build my credit score?

It builds a record, which is not quite the same thing. Your on time payments have been reported since June 2022 and have fed into Experian and TransUnion scores since late 2023, but the boost is modest: the amounts are small and short lived. One late mark does far more damage than months of on time payments do good.

Does Klarna show on my Equifax report?

No. Klarna reports to Experian and TransUnion only, so your Equifax file will not show Klarna orders or missed payments. That is why lenders checking different agencies can decide differently, and why checking all three files is worth it.

Can I remove a Klarna mark from my credit file?

Only if the mark is wrong. If something inaccurate has been recorded, raise a dispute with the agency and it must be investigated. If the mark is accurate, it stays for six years however politely you ask. Anyone charging to wipe accurate marks is selling something they cannot deliver.

Is Klarna regulated in the UK?

Yes. Since 15 July 2026 buy now pay later sits inside FCA regulation as deferred payment credit: affordability checks, clearer information, proper support if you fall behind, and access to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Regulated agreements also bring Section 75 protection on qualifying purchases over £100. Agreements made before that date stay unregulated for their whole life.
